Would you like to find out more about the collections at the Heritage Centre in the Millennium Library? Wanting to take your family history from computer screen to archive? Looking for next steps to take with your research?

New for 2012 are fortnightly ‘next steps’ drop-in presentations with alternating ‘Ask an Archive Specialist’ sessions in between, every Wednesday at 12:30pm.

This presentation takes you through the basics of marriage licence records, how to use them and how to find them, free of charge, at the Heritage Centre. The talk should last around 30 minutes and there is no need to book, but you may need to collect a free ticket from the heritage enquiry desk at the entrance to the Second Floor. Numbers are limited to 45 but if there is enough demand the talk will be repeated at 1pm.

After the talk, feel free to stay and learn how to use microfilm and microfiche machines (or log on to a library PC with your library card) and get searching and browsing for your own ancestors. Heritage Centre staff will be available to help you and the Archive Specialist will be around for the rest of the hour to answer questions. If you are not already a member of the library, you can join afterwards and start using the resources straight away.

The next ‘Ask an Archive Specialist’ session will be next Wednesday, again at 12:30pm. These sessions are also very popular! Bring your question to the heritage centre desk and a member of staff will help you straight away, or refer you to the Archive Specialist on a first-come, first-served basis. Poetry Workshops

2012 has started very creatively at the Millennium Library as we have had a poet with us on two separate Saturdays. Caroline Gilfillan has spent several hours with customers helping them to create their own poems – for some people this has been the first time they’ve tried writing creatively since leaving school.

Back in January we were encouraging people to write longer poems and this was written by Jacqueline:

The Sound of Silence

The sound of silence is loud,

No speaking, shuffling, breathing allowed,

Scrapes and creaks of library seats,

Mouse clicks and computer beeps,

Silent sitters

Daydream and fantasise,

Aristotle, Plato, and Nietzsche help minds to philosophise

Challenging ideals of today in a new guise,

Between olden books of different realities,

As the diverse read with all mentalities,

Eyes popping over screens and reference books,

A sound magnified as each reader looks,

Sssh! Hisses,

A verbal slap that rarely misses

Shaking the speaker from their conversation

Back into deep concentration, engrossed in revision.

Frustrated fingers tap the tired photocopier,

Coins titter down from the cash register,

Fresh hot white paper

Into the printing oven

As the smell of sharp ink

Prints someone’s work with precision.

Knitted frowns

Nursed between bookie crevices

Knowledge thrives in this land of make believe,

Laced between each aisle of overwhelming sources

Wrinkled papers of stories, poems, all creative forces

Fact star crossed with Fiction

Languages teaching foreign users a new diction,

Stand in aisles side by side

Information hub where cultures collide

Where all walk of life read and breathe

Take those who allow it, out of their seat

Out into the world’s open reach

Writings that sit in this home of cultural distinction,

Historical reformation, warring nations, religious celebration,

Scientific fission, political indecision, artistic communication, university dissertation, miscellaneous, social procrastination.

Today as part of Norfolk Library and Information Service’s celebrations for National Libraries Day Caroline was back in the library, this time she was helping people to create poems and Haikus using 140 characters or fewer ready to be posted straight away on to Twitter.

Here are a selection of what was created today:

I pounce, I tumble

falling to the ground

I shut my eyes

and hope my feet will touch down.

Over the houses and gardens

Since the first post about how National Libraries Day is being celebrated in Norfolk more of our libraries have added events to the official website.

As well as at Loddon and the Millennium Library activities will be taking place at:

Cromer, Stalham, Dersingham. Hunstanton, Kings Lynn, Wymondham and Costessey.

National Libraries Day

Saturday 4th February 2012

Norfolk and Norwich Millennium Library

National Libraries Day has been created to celebrate libraries and library staff, at the Millennium Library we are very lucky in having great customers helping us to be the busiest library in the country for the 5th year running.

To celebrate #NLD12 we will have the following free activities happening:

11.00 – Story time

Our regular Dads’ Time story session becomes all about loving books, stories and libraries today and will be followed by a craft session.

11.30-1.00 – Free Fitness and Exercise Advice drop in.

Exercise professional Alex De Lyon will be in the library answering any questions that you have regarding exercise or fitness. We will also have a display of health, diet and exercise books on display ready for loan.

Everyone who asks Alex a question will be entered in to a prize draw!

12.00-12.45 – Poetry for Twitter (& other short poems)

Poet and creative writing tutor Caroline Gilfillan will be in the library helping people to compose short poems on the theme of books and libraries. Any poems that are 140 characters or less will be tweeted there and then as part of the #NLD12 fun. We will display longer poems in the library as they are created and hope to get them published either here on the blog or on the Norfolk Library Facebook page.

All day – Take a Chance on Me

100s of new and exciting books have been wrapped up and put into a giant lucky dip just for National Libraries Day. You could discover a new favourite book or genre – so go on take one extra book from our lucky dip!

If you can’t make it to the Millennium Library, or indeed any of Norfolk’s libraries, this Saturday we will also have a display just outside Mothercare in the Castle Mall Shopping Centre where you can join the library, find out more information about all of our services and event have a go at our simple family history quiz!

Craft Workshop

Great Yarmouth Community Library

Although it is currently not the best time of year to be gardening, we haven’t forgotten about out Community Garden.

Rather than thinking about plants this time however we are working with artist Kate Munro at a one day workshop to create a brand new mosaic for the garden.

Holocaust Memorial Day talk and discussion

Holocaust and Children

Norfolk and Norwich Millennium Library

Thursday 26th January, 6.30-7.30pm

To commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day Dr B.J. Epstein and Dr Rachael McLennan from the University of East Anglia will be talking about how children and young people are portrayed in book about the Holocaust and also how children and young people are taught about this topic.

After the short presentations the evening will become much more of an informal discussion where all manner of books and films will be discussed – from the Diary of Anne Frank to John Boyne’s Boy in the Striped Pyjamas as well as general Holocaust history and literature.
